Font Notes:
There is an entry for this Twyford [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SP6626/twyford/] [accessed 28 January 2016], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Sheahan (1862) writes: "The font is circular, ancient, large, and plain." The Victoria County History (Buckingham, vol. 4, 1927) notes: "Half the church of Twyford seems to have been given by one of the Fougères family to Fougères Priory [...] before 1207, when a presentation was made by King John to the other half. [...] The reset south doorway and the western jambs of the chancel arch are the only surviving details of a late 12th-century church [...] The font is of the 13th century, but has been very drastically restored. The bowl is circular and stands on a circular moulded stem with a square plinth having a human face carved at the south-west angle and an animal's head at the northwest. The bowl is further supported by four modern shafts encircling the central stem." This font consists of a tub-shaped basin with plain sides and moulded upper rim, raised on a round central shaft and four outer colonnettes, all modern, on a square lower base and a square plinth, both modern as well; the basin itself has been re-cut and re-tooled, so it is only Sheahan's desciption above to give us an idea of what it looked before the alteration. The wooden cover is round, flat and plain, with a ring handle.
