Scene Description: Source caption: "St Bene't's is a parish church in central Cambridge. Parts of the church, most notably the tower, are Anglo-Saxon, and it is the oldest church in Cambridgeshire and the oldest building in Cambridge. St Bene't's Anglo-Saxon tower was built between AD 1000–1050, although the present bell-openings were added in 1586. Until 1579 it was the Corpus Christi College chapel."

There are five entries for Cambridge [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL4458/cambridge/] [accessed 29 March 2016], none of which mentions cleric or church in it. The RCHM (Cambridge, 1959) notes this pre-Conquest church dates probably from the second quarter of the 11th century; the font, in the north aisle, however, "of marble and freestone, with round moulded bowl and baluster-stem, 18th-century." The Victoria County History (Cambridge..., vol. 3, 1959) notes: "ST. BENE'T, architecturally the oldest church in Cambridgeshire, [...] may well be the earliest foundation of those in the southern part of Cambridge. The fragmentary character of its parish suggests that later ones were carved out of it. Edward of Cambridge and his mother gave the advowson to St. Alban's Abbey in the days of Abbot Paul [...] (1077– 1093);" no font mentioned in the VCH entry. [NB: we have no information on the medieval font(s) of this church]
