view of church exterior in context - churchyard, cemetery

Scene Description: Source caption: "Headstones in the overgrown churchyard of St.Mary at Nutley. There was a church here from c1100 until 1845 when it was demolished to make way for a new church built in 1846. A dwindling congregation and increasing repair bills necessitated demolition of the Victorian church in 1956."

There is an entry for Nutley [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU6044/nutley/] [accessed 11 July 2018] but it mentions neither priest nor church in it. White (1878) reports that the church "was rebuilt by subscription" and the "font is octagonal". The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 3, 1908) notes: "The church [...] is entirely modern, [...] having been rebuilt [...] in 1845. One voussoir of a mid-twelfthcentury arch, with zigzag ornament, is preserved in the vestry, as a relic of the former church. The font has an octagonal bowl, and stands near the south doorway of the nave; it is modern, together with all the fittings of the church." [NB: we have no information on the font of the earlier church, nor is it clear what functions existed in the previous church. The Hampshire County Council Hantsweb [www3.hants.gov.uk/localpages/north-east/basingstoke/nutley.htm] states: "The twelfth century Church of Our Lady was rebuilt in 1845, incorporating a few of the architectural features of the mediaeval building. The Victorian structure was itself demolished in 1955".]
