Font Notes:
No entry found for this Sherfield in the Domesday survey. White (1878) describes the baptismal font in this church: "The advowson of the church of Sherfield upon Loddon was given by William de Warblington to the priory of Merton in 1222. [...] The font is octagonal, standing upon a triple base, with eight Devon marble columns surrounding the central one of stone." The Victoria County History (Hampshire, vol. 4, 1911) does not mention a font, but notes on this church: "The oldest parts of the building [...] belong to the second quarter of the 14th century, but all the rest of the church has been rebuilt, some of the old details being used." [NB: White (ibid.) reports that the church was renovated in 1866 and, again, in 1872, when the wooden tower, still reported in the National Gazetter of 1868, was demolished and replaced by a new one built of stone -- One could assume from White's description that the font he mentions is modern, from either of the two 19th-century renovations he notes; we have no information on the font from the medieval church]. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SU6718256644] mentions no font in it. [NB: the parish of Sherfield English [cf. Index entry] has, curiously, a similar history of church building and replacement].
