There are two entries for Berkswell [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SP2479/berkswell/] [accessed 1 December 2014], but neither of them mentions cleric or church in it. The Victoria County History (Warwick, vol. 4, 19147) notes): "The earliest remains of the existing fabric indicate a chancel as now with the crypt below it and an aisle-less nave, dating from c. 1150. [...] The round font with carvings is modern." There are two fonts in this church, both modern: an octagonal wooden one located in the centre of the nave, towards the west end; it is the work of woodcarver Roberth Thompson (some of his work bears his hallmark, a mouse -- cf. also Ilmington Church]; the second font, consisting of a cylindrical basin raised on four clustered columns is Victorian, a 19th-century version of a late-Norman or Early English traditional design; this second font is located in the crypt [NB: the Norman church is said to have been built on the foundations of an earlier one, and the fabric of the crypt is claimed locally to go back to the 8th century, but we have no information on the medieval font of this church]
