Church Notes: earlier wooden church of ca. 1100 a chapel of ease to Stedesdorf; replaced by stone church 13thC; destroyed 1540; re-built; demolished 1847; present church of 1854;
The entry for Esens in the Evangelische-Lutherische Kirchenkreis Harlingerland [https://www.kirchenkreis-harlingerland.de/gemeinden/esens] [accessed 22 February 2022] notes and illustrates a composite baptismal font: bronze basin made by Hinrich Klighe in 1474 on a wooden base of ca. 1600; the basin has a Gothic arcade with a Crucifixion, Mary and Joseph presenj, the Apostles Paul, Andrew, James the greater, Bartholomew, Philip, a Baptism of Christ in the Jordan, a bishop (probably St Nicholas), Thomas, Matthew, John and Peter; the bronze figures supporting the basin were lost and replaced by the present wooden sphinxes around 1600; wooden cover also ca. 1600 [="Zu den ältesten Objekten zählt die Bronzetaufe, die 1474 von Hinrich Klinghe gegossen wurde. The unidentified bishop figure on the basin could perhaps be St. Magnus? [Magnus of Trani? / of Füssen?]; at the upper and lower basin sides are inscriptions in German identifuing the maker and the year, as well as several protruding human heads. The base ihasstrange putto-like winged creatures with human female breasts [sphinxes? cf. supra]; one of them has feline hind legs, the others simply multiple scrolls. The wooden cover is polygonal, of several volumes tapering up in size, busily decorated with scroll-work and mouldings.
