Rouse (1825) writes: "Over the ancient crypt, in South-street. Chichester, already described, is a very spacious room, supposed to have been a place of worship; under the north window of this apartment, looking into the church-yard of the cathedral, is an antique font, fixed in the wall, cut out of one large stone; both the font and the figure which supports it appear to be of Saxon workmanship." The Victoria County history (Sussex, vol. 3, 1935) makes no mention of this font.
