Object Type: Baptismal Font1?
Church/Chapel: Cathedral Church of St. Machar (C. of S.)
Church Patron Saints: St. Machar [aka Mochumma]
Country Name: Scotland
Location: Aberdeen City
Century and Period: 11th - 12th century, Norman
Credit and Acknowledgements: We are grateful to Colin Smith for his photographs of church and modern font
Font Notes:
Described in the Cathedral web site: "The font, designed by Hew Lorimer (1954), shows St Machar baptising converts, and also depicts the fish, which was an early Christian symbol or secret sign at a time of persecution. The Greek word for fish (ICHTHUS) forms an acrostic - Jesus, Christ, Son, of God, Saviour." [NB: the earliest fabric of the building dates from the Norman period, although an earlier church may have existed in this location since the 6th century, but we have no information on the earlier fonts of this church]
