Noted in Rees (2003) as "an early stone font, carved from a massive boulder. It is known as Adomnán's font after the monk from Iona who is said to have worked in Glen Lyon." The baptismal font in use inside the church, at the east end of the nave, near the altar, is modern, like the church itself, which dates to 1901 [NB: the old church was demolished in 1901]. Outside, in the porch, half built into the wall, is an object known as "St. Adomnán's font" and claimed locally to be the baptismal font from the original church here ca. 700 A.D. [NB: local lore also lays claim to Fortingall being the birth-place of Pontius Pilate]. The crude basin appears polygonal on the outside, very irregular, with a rounded basin well; it is raised on a makeshift base of square shape, built of several blocks. There appears to be nothing on the font to substantiate the early-date claim, but there is a burial stone claimed to be ca. 600 A.D., and three fragments of a Pictish cross slab said to date from ca. 800 [NB: the 'Pictish' slab is decorated with an elaborate interlace of linked rings and may indeed have been originally part of an early cross].
