Font Notes:
Noted in Brusewitz (1888) and Fischer (1918). Noted and illustrated in Hallbäck (1966) as a baptismal font made of red sandstone in the late-12th century, as an example of Swedish font with English influences. The Göteborgs stadsmuseum holds a copy of the original sandstone font from Månstad parish church [NB: the font was probably deposited in the Museum in the late-19th century, hence the copy there; the Museum records indicate the font was returned to Månstad's parish church in 1954]; their records suggest a date in the early 12th century. The original font is Noted and illustrated in the SHM Medeltidens bildvärld [ref.: 920607F4] as a baptismal font made of sandstone carved with a rather unique set of motifs; dated to the second half of the 12th century. The font is a roughly cylindrical basin carved with crude motifs that do not appear to follow any decorative plan, nor the standard repertoir of the area; one of the motifs could represent an attempt at a human figure; it must have been carved by an enterprising local artisan with more enthusiasm than artistic ability. The reddish sandstone basin is raised on a round squat block of grey stone that serves as base. The wooden angel 'floating' above the font is 18th-century.
