Noted in Hallbäck (1971-1972) [NB: covering fonts from the Skaraborg area of Västergötland]. Described and illustrated in 'Medeltidens bildvärld' [http://medeltidbild.historiska.se/medeltidbild/visa/foremal.asp?objektid=920901F2] [accessed 8 October 2010] as a sandtone baptismal font of the second half of the 12th century, now in the Göteborgs stadsmuseum; its original church is unknown, but the MB catalogue [cf. supra] lists it as being from the Västergötland region, in southwest Sweden. On-site notes: the font is monolithic, but of two volumes separated by a thick rope moulding; the lower volume is irregular -probably damaged- but was originally square with plain tapering sides; the upper half, the basin proper, has figural and animal, as well as floral motifs on the sides: 1)on the left a hexapetaled flower inscribed in a circle; on the right, a quadruped stands over -and appears to arrack- a human figure that is lying on the ground below the beast; 2)two facing quadrupeds with human figure with raised arms in between them; 3)two panels: a human figure with raised hands in the left panel and a passant quadruped facing it in the right panel; 4)two facing birds with a plant or tree in between them. The carving is very weathered now, but it was probably rather crude originally anyway. The inner well of the basin is imperfectly rounded, with cuts at 180-degree angles that appear to have been used to secure a font cover to the basin; there is no drain hole and the well is unlined; on the upper surface of the font there are two parallel incised grooves all around.
