Gastrell (1845- ) notes that an ancient chapel here was "repaired by ye Inhab.[itants]" in 1664, but was by 1717 [the date of Gastrell's original edition] "old and Ruinous"; In 1720 it was rebuilt, again by the locals, but had neither a font, nor were the Sacraments administered, and there were no burials at the time, though, Gastrell adds, "Divine Service [was] performed in it, 1724". [NB: the present church, St. Michael and All Angels was built in 1879, its churchyard occupies the site of the old chapel -- we have no information on whether a font ever existed in this chapel]
