Kelly's Directory of Essex for 1894 notes: "The church of St. Mary, partly rebuilt in 1704 and restored in 1888 [...] The register dates from the year 1560". The 1704 church was built out of the ruins of the priory church at Wix; the Victoria County History (Essex, vol. 2, 1907) notes: "Wix Priory was founded by Walter Mascherell, Alexander and Edith, the children of Walter the deacon, who is mentioned [...] as holding the manor of Wix in Domesday." The priory was dissolved in 1525; we have no information on whether or not a baptismal font existed in the early church, but it must have had one when it was used as a parrochial church]
