Font Notes:
Listed in Mackeprang (1941) as a baptismal font of the Himmerland-Mariagertypen, Mariagergruppen-C, to with he fonts at Øster Hornum and Stenild. Described and illustrated in Slomann (1967). Noted and illustrated in Søren Kaspersen's Jyske fonte med modstillede løver.[1] Et præliminært studie, 17.8.2016 klo 23.15 | Tieteelliset artikkelit | TAHITI 04/2016 [https://tahiti.journal.fi/article/view/85640/44590] [accessed 21 November 2023] as a noteworthy font on which the armas of a large-breasted women are into the mouths of a pair of lions on the sides of her; Kaspersen (ibid) recalls a somewhar similar occurence on the fonts at Svenstrup and Kastbjerg, although the two swallowing beasts are dragons in these cases; Kaspersen (ibid.) further notes that this font somewhat reminds those in the so-called Aalborg-group, the bi-corporates replaced here by pairs of lions. On-site notes: baptismal font made of granite; it consists of a large roughly hemispherical basin raised on a small round-to-square base without ornament; the basin has a pair of lions that appear to devouring a human figure that stands between them; there is also a bi-corporal lion whose head is rather sheepish-looking, in contrast with the beautifully rendered bodies and floriated tails; between the rumps of two of the lions is one of the strange floating heads that appear on many of these Jutland granite fonts [NB: also on French and Spanish fonts of this period (Pyrenees, Castilla-Leon and Navarre)]. The basin well is bucket-shaped on the inside, unlined, and bears a central drain hole. There is no cover present, nor are there any traces of mounting hardware on the basin.
