Font Notes:
There is an entry for this Headley [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TQ2054/headley/] [accessed 16 December 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Allen (1831) writes: "The font is a plain octagon on a round pillar", without a suggestion of its date; the church itself, notes Allen (ibid.), "was taxed at £5" in the 'valor' of Edward I (1272-1307). Brayley (1850) writes: "The font is old, plain, and octagonal in form." The Victoria County History (Surrey, vol. 3, 1911) notes: "Headley Church was rated at £5 in the 13th century [...] The present building was erected in 1855, excepting the tower, which was added a few years later [...] The former church had a low square tower at its west end, and is said to have been much dilapidated before it was pulled down. All that is left of it is set up in the churchyard over the grave of the late rector, the Rev. Ferdinand Faithful, who died in 1871, in the form of a small rectangular ivy-covered building with a 15th-century arch at the west, and in it are preserved a few details, such as the tracery of a two-light window with trefoiled heads, and the bowl of an 18th-century font. The present font is modern." [NB: the font in the grotto is modern, said to be 18thC -- the font inside the church is also modern, said to be 19thC -- we have no information on the font of the 13th-century church here].
