Scene Description: Source caption: "St Peter's Church, Petersham. The attractive little church of St Peter's lies down this lane, just off the very busy Petersham Road. In the pleasant churchyard is the grave of Captain George Vancouver who was born in 1757 and died in 1798. He sailed with Captain Cook to Antarctica and was with him on his last voyage to the Pacific. Captain Vancouver discovered Vancouver Island in British Columbia, which was named after him. The path beyond the church leads to Petersham Meadows."

Font Notes:
There is an entry for this Petersham [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TQ1873/petersham/] [accessed 21 December 2015]; it mentions a church in it. The Victoria County History (Surrey, vol. 3, 1911) notes: "A church existed at Petersham at the time of the Domesday Survey, and in 1266 was appropriated to Merton Priory as a chapelry of Kingston. [...] In this year an assignment was made for the endowment of a chaplain to celebrate divine service three times a week in the said chapel, namely, on Sunday, Wednesday, and Friday, and freely dispense there the sacrament of baptism [...] The [present] church is said to have been built in 1505, but a blocked 13th-century lancet window in the north wall of the chancel shows that part at least is of much older date. [...] The altar-table and font are modern". Noted in the 'Local History Notes' of the Borough of Richmond-upon-Thames [www.richmond.gov.uk/local_history_st_peters_petersham.pdf] [accessed 14 September 2010] as a baptismal font of 1740; it has a Jacobean-style cover. [NB: we have no information on the earlier font here]
