No individual entry for Caterham found in the Domesday survey. Allen (1831) writes: "The font is a large round stone, supported by a large pillar, round which are four small ones." In Brayley (1850): "The font, very old and rude, is a large circular stone basin, supported by a central pillar and four smaller ones." The Victoria County History (Surrey, vol. 4, 1912) notes that some of the fabric of the old church of St. Lawrence may date to ca. 1100, with the main body being 13th-century; "The 13th-century font and the 17th-century communion table from the old disused church at Caterham have been placed in" the new church of St. John the Evangelist, built in 1882. The Caterham entry in the website of the Diocese of Southwark [www.southwark.anglican.org/parishes/059bk5] [accessed 11 August 2010] notes: "The Font is very ancient and comes from St. Lawrence Church, Caterham on the Hill. It was presented by the Rector, the Reverend Jarvis Kenrick, in 1871. It was restored in his memory in 1881. " [NB: the new church of St John the Evangelist was consecrated in 1882]. The Parish of St. Mary the Virgin, Catterham [www.stmary-caterham.org.uk/lawrence.html] [accessed 22 March 2016] reports on baptisms St Lawrence now: "The portable font enables baptisms to be performed, and weddings can be celebrated if a special licence is granted."
