Harrison (1920) writes: "disused font, square ; stone bowl (stoup or mortar)" The Sussex Archaeology website [www.sussexarch.org.uk] informs that excavations carried out in 1849 at the burnt chapel in the Norman castle discovered: "in the centre of the Nave, a stone font. The top of a pillar piscina was also found at the eastern end of the nave." These two objects are illustrated in an article by Lower (1853). The font itself appears to have been a typical bucket-shaped tub on a circular plinth, the upper part of the font being very badly damaged.
