There is an entry for Carshalton [variant spelling in the Domesday Book [http://opendomesday.org/place/TQ2764/carshalton/] [accessed 16 March 2016]; it reports a church in it. Brayley (1850) notes: "The font, standing in front of the communion-table, is small and of stone." The Victoria County History (Surrey, vol. 4, 1912) notes: "In the reign of Henry II the priory of Merton received a grant of the advowson of Carshalton from Faramus de Bologne. [...] The church was appropriated by the convent, which retained the rectory and advowson until its dissolution in 1540 [...] The church was apparently erected early in the 12th century"; the VCH entry mentions no font in it. The present font, a 20th-century octagonal stone font with a round canopy supported on eight stylised colonnettes, is illustrated by Steven Cadman [www.flickr.com/photos/stevecadman/3494835682/] [accessed 6 August 2010]. [NB: the Parish website [www.southwark.anglican.org/parishes/058m] [accessed 6 August 2010] suggests that G.F. Bodley probably designed the modern font. The font cover is said to be by Ninian Comper]. [NB: we have no information on the medieval font of the 11th-century (?) church, or on the font mentioned by Brayley [cf. supra]]
