There is an entry for this Wotton [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TQ1247/wotton/] [accessed 14 December 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Brayley (1850) writes: "The font is a circular basin, of stone, standing on a similar pedestal, in a pew near the entrance." The Victoria County History (Surrey, vol. 3, 1911) notes: "The church of St. John the Evangelist is not mentioned in Domesday, but from certain evidence in the existing structure it was probably standing in the 11th century [...] Within the chapel is preserved a font of white marble, with circular fluted basin on a tall baluster stem of about the same date, but possibly as old as the date of John Evelyn's birth in 1620." This font is probably the same one referred to in Brayley, but moved to the north chapel where it rests now. The VCR also reports a modern font in this church. The Historical Environment Record of the Surrey County Council [www.exploringsurreyspast.org.uk/GetRecord/SHHER_9694] [accessed 29 July 2010] reports two fonts in this church: "19th century stone font in 13th century style, old font now in north chapel. 17th century, stone with ogee cover." [NB: we have no information on the medieval font(s) of this church]
