view of font

Scene Description: the composite nature of the font is evident; the basin is probably 12thC, the upper part of the base perhaps 14thC and the modern lower end is described in the CRSBI (2018) as a "relatively modern mortar-rendered block decorated with late-medieval carved fragments".

There are two entries for this Ovington [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/TL7642/ovington/] [accessed 5 July 2018], neither of which mentions priest of church in it. Bettley & Pevsner (2007) note: "Font. C12. Very large circular bowl. The base no doubt due to Mrs. Brett" [i.e., Margaret Anna Brett, wife of the early 20th-century rector; she was active in the restoration work at Ovington and at Tilbury-juxta-Clare -- cf. infra]. The SEAX-Heritage Conservation website [http://unlockingessex.essexcc.gov.uk] entry for Ovington St. Mary's notes: "the font is probably 14th century [...] out of fragments of medieval dressings and tombs. The base of the font at Ovington is thus made". The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TL7632742559] reads "Tub Font. C12". The entry for this church in the CRSBI (2018) notes: "There is no fabric visible earlier than the 14thc, and the only Romanesque feature is the font. [...] Under the bell turret at the W end of the nave is a tub font with a large roughly-shaped bowl standing on a later base with foliate spurs, and this on a relatively modern mortar-rendered block decorated with late-medieval carved fragments. The bowl is lead lined and there are remains of plaster coating. There are no obvious lock marks, and the rim might have been shaved at some stage (although not recently). [...] Bettley and Pevsner suggest that the decoration of the font plinth was done in the early 20thc by Margaret Anna Brett, wife of the the Rev. C. W. Brett, who was responsible for similar eccentricities at St Margaret’s, Tilbury-juxta-Clare, 1½ miles to the S."
