There are three entries for this Hawkwell [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TQ8691/hawkwell/] [accessed 12 April 2019] none of which mentions cleric or church in it. Benton (1867-1888) wrote: "The pulpit, with the date 1870 to be found within, is of carved oak, the work of the present rector's own hands [...] The font of carved Caen stone, with an oak cover, bearing the same date as the pulpit, was likewise executed by the manual labour of the Rev. J. Montagu." The 27 July 1959 listing for this church in Historic England [NGR: TQ8602891862] reports in its 27 July 1959 listing: "No pulpit, no font." Philip Benton's The History of Rochford Hundred [...] (Rochford: A. Harrington, 1867): 267 notes: "The font of carved Caen stone, with an oak cover, bearing the same date as the pulpit [i.e., 1870], was likewise executed by the manual labor of the Rev. J. Montagu." [NB: we have no information on the whereabouts of the medieval font]
