Noted in the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923): "Font: In S. Aisle--disused, octagonal bowl with panelled sides; alternate sides shorter that the others, and with projecting buttresses; traces of mortices of former staples, 15th-century, much defaced. Bettley & Pevsner (2007) note: "Font. 1847. Designed by Mr. Smart, executed by W. Ollett." [NB: the Essex County Council's Heritage Conservation website [http://unlockingessex.essexcc.gov.uk/custom_pages/monument_detail.asp?kids=1&monument_id=4757] [accesed 6 July 2010], however, reports a font of the 15th century, and stoups of the same date in this church [we assume the report of a 15th-century here to be an error, as there appears to be no local or bibliographic record of the medieval font] . The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: TL6295322963 ] notes: "Parish Church of St. Mary the Virgin. C13 presumed origins, early C14 chancel and out aisle walls, C15 south porch, arcade, chancel arch, tower and S chapel, all restored in late C19-early C20 [...] The interior contains a font in the S aisle, a disused octagonal bowl with panelled sides"; no stoups mentioned in it. [cf. Index entries for Gt. Dunmow Nos. 2, 3, and 4 for the stoups]
