There are three entries for Nunington [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SE6679/nunnington/] [accessed 3 December 2019] one of which reports a priest and a church in it. Bulmer's Directory of 1890 does not mention the font, but notes on the church: "The church, of which the original dedication was All Saints, though it appears to have been in later times ascribed or re-dedicated to St. James, was rebuilt in 1672 [...] it was restored in 1884." The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (York North Riding, vol. 1, 1914) notes: "From the general resemblance to the church at Oswaldkirk it is possible that the nave dates from the latter part of the 12th century, but the earliest details at present existing are of late 13th-century date. The tower appears to have been rebuilt in 1672. The whole church was restored and refitted in 1884"; no font mentioned in it. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SE6659679073] notes: "Church. Late C13 nave and chancel; tower of 1672; restored and reroofed, and porch, vestry and tower arch rebuilt in 1883-84 [...] Tall cylindrical font with octagonal cover and finial, probably C17." The entry for this church in Kirkdale Churches [www.kirkdalechurches.org.uk/all-saints-and-st-james-nunnington/] [accessed 3 December 2019] notes: "The Font, of an unusual design, may have been the work of a local mason at the 1672 restoration, with an oak cover of the same date, replacing the original font which was possibly destroyed during the Commonwealth period." [NB: we have no information on the medieval font of this church]
