The Domesday survey of 1086 reports two priests in this location, presumably including a church. Bulmer's Directory of 1892 notes: "The church, the third that has occupied the site, is dedicated to St. Andrew, and was rebuilt by Sir Tatton Sykes, Bart., in 1877. It is a handsome edifice of Aislaby stone, in the Early English style of architecture, erected from the designs of the late G. E. Street, Esq., R.A., the eminent architect. The plan comprises chancel, nave, a western narthex porch, vestry, baptistery [...]". The modern baptismal font consists of a multi-lobed basin with decorated sides, raised on a central shaft and eight slender colonnettes with moulded capitals and bases, on a round plinth with kneeling stone; in one of the the 13th-century styles of font design. The wooden cover is also multi-lobed; flat, with metal decoration and ring handle; probably of the same date as the font. [NB: we have no information on the font from the earlier churches here]
