There are two entries for [Chipping] Ongar [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/TL5503/chipping-ongar/] [accessed 18 March 2019] neither of which mentions cleric or church in it. Neither the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (Essex, 1916-1923) nor the VCH (1956) or Pevsner (1976) report a baptismal font at St. Martin's, but Bettley & Pevsner (2007) do: "Font. C14, found and erected on a new base in 1963. Square, with corner pillars and two cusped panels on each face." The entry for this parish in the Victoria County History (Essex, vol. 4, 1956) informs: "there has been a church at Chipping Ongar since about 1100 if not earlier". [NB: we have no information on the earlier font]. [cf. Index entry for Chipping Ongar No. 2 for a medieval stoup listed for this church]
