There are three entries for Worcester [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SO8454/worcester/] [accessed 30 October 2014], neither of which mention cleric or church in it. The Victoria County History (Worcester, vol. 4, 1924) gives information on the different buildings of the cathedral and notes: "The church is particularly poor in any fittings. [...] The font stood, in the 18th century, against the second pillar on the south, but was destroyed about 1748, when a new one of marble was placed in the midst of the Jesus chapel; this in turn has been discarded and a still newer one placed in the westernmost bay of the south aisle." A modern font here is noted in Brooks ( Pevsner (2007): "Font. By. G.F. Bodley, 1891. Sandstone, octagonal, ogee niches with angels. Immensely tall pinnacled cover reaching to the vault (cf. Bodley's at Southwark Cathedral)." [NB: the Southwark Cathedral cover is a grand tall affair with statues, pinnacles, etc.; the font at Southwark is octagonal and modern, in dark green marble]. The modern font is of the continued-shape type, with out distinction of basin and base, with standing angels holding shields under pinnacled arches; on an octagonal plinth. The cover does not raise; the lower level opens four of the eight leaves, to show the painted and gilded inside and provide access to the inner basin. [NB: the original church here dates at least from the 10th century, but we have no information on the early fonts]
