Scene Description: Source caption: "This doorway was blocked at the time the church was rebuilt in 1878/9. There was originally a porch here, but because it was in a ruinous state, it was removed when the door was blocked."

view of church exterior - south portal - detail
Scene Description: Source caption: "These carvings appear on the column on the right of the blocked door, on the church's south side. These are thought to be Norman, and probably have been re-used from another part of the church. There are also carvings on the door's other column, but they are so weathered that it is difficult to make out any real detail."

There is an entry for Ribbesford [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SO7874/ribbesford/] [accessed 27 October 2014], but neither mentions cleric nor church in it. Ribbesford is not mentioned in Miller (1890). The Victoria County History (Worcester, vol. 4, 1924) notes: "The present north aisle probably covers the area of a small church built here about 1100, the only parts of which now left are the western half of the north wall, the south doorway reset in the south wall of the south aisle, and some carved fragments re-used in the modern masonry", but reports that the font, shown at the west end of the north aisle, in the interior plan of the church, is modern. Brooks & Pevsner (2007) inform the nfont is "by Thomas Gordon, 1886; diapered square bowl, carved by Martyn & Emms". [NB: we have no information on the medieval font]. [NB: the nearby church of Bewdley St. Anne's has a modern font as well]. [NB: the National Archives (UK) [ref.: [no title] 850BEWDLEY/8377/20/ii 19th-20th centuries] contain: "Photograph, 2 letters, newspaper cutting and other papers relating to presentation by Ribbesford Church of a font to the Chapel of St. James the Less in Demerara in the Diocese of Guiana. 1889" -- we have no information on whether the donated font was ancient or modern, presumably the latter]. The modern font at Ribbesford St. Leonard's was located at the west end of the north aisle ca. 1924.
