There is an entry for Spetchley [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SO8953/spetchley/] [accessed 1 October 2014], but it mentions neityher cleric nor church in it. Miller (1890) reports "a Norman [...] circular font" in this church. The Victoria County History (Worcester, vol. 3, 1913) notes: "Spetchley was originally a chapelry, [...] dependent upon the cathedral church of Worcester. The date at which it became parochial is not known, but it is called a church in 1291", but, on the present church, it adds: "The nave and chancel date from about 1330, and there is no evidence of older work on the site. [...] The font is modern except the bowl, which may be as early as the 12th century; it is cup-shaped with a small roll around its lower edge and a modern moulded rim." English Heritage (1965), however, reports: "The big round post-medieval font is on a round stem." The Spetchley Gardens and Church website [www.cotswolds.info/worcestershire/spetchley.shtml] [accessed 7 June 2010] notes: "in the southwest of the nave stands the font; this is believed to be of 12th century origins, the wooden cover is of a later date."
