The Kirkconnel Parish Historical Society website [http://www.kirkconnel.org] [accessed 10 May 2010] notes: "The base of an 11th century cross was found in the dyke of the west glebe. There is no doubt that it came from Kirkland, the site of the old church. [...] It is the oldest item in the Church. The bowl which holds the water has engraved on the back the names of all the ministers of St. Conal's from Peter Rae 1732 to William McKenzie Cameron 1958-1969." [NB: it refers to the small metal bowl insert that is used to hold the baptismal water -- the original cross may have been from nearby St. Connel's church, Kirkland, now in ruins] ]
