The entry in Domesday for Amounderness [https://opendomesday.org/place/SD3742/hambleton/] [accessed 20 March 2019] that mentions three church in it includes this Hambleton. The entry for this township in the Victoria County History (Lancaster, vol. 7, 1912) notes: "The chapel of of St. Mary probably existed from an early date, and may have been the oratory at Hambleton for which Robert Shireburne of Stonyhurst obtained a licence in 1456. [...] It was in 1567 licensed for the administration of the sacraments and for burials. [...] The church was rebuilt in 1749". Hartwell & Pevsner (2009) reports an "over-ornate alabaster" font of ca. 1920 in this church; the church itself is a 18th-century rebuild of a late-medieval church [NB: we have no information on the earlier font(s) of this church]. The GENUKI entry for this church [http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/LAN/Hambleton/BlessedVirginMary.shtml] notes: "In 2009 the church was re-ordered […] the font was relocated to the front of the church near to the pulpit". The modern font in this church is noted and illustrated in the Imperial War Museum (GB) site [www.iwm.org.uk/memorials/item/memorial/72387] [accessed 20 March 2019]: "An ornately carved marble Baptismal Font, octagonal font on a pillar stand, with 4 slim legs supporting, set on a slim plinth, on a larger base. A commemorative plaque is attached to the base. The Font has a wooden cover. Inscription: TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN MEMORY OF/ THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR BEST FOR THEIR/ COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR. 1914 - 1919./ (6 Names)
