Church Notes: female monastery founded 1276; built 13th-14thC; site of the Comunidad de Canonesas Regulares del Santo Sepulcro [= Order of Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem] [NB: the monastery has its own church but we have no information on the font in it] -- for the origonal church at Terraza see http://www.arquivoltas.com/3-HU-Ribagorza/990373-Terraza.htm [accessed 7 October 2018]
There is a very irregular and crudely executed but possibly late-medieval stone baptismal font now in this convent; the font is believed to have originated, not in the original 13th-century church of the convent, but in some nearby village or hamlet. The font consists of a round tapering basin of very irregular proportions; there is a broad flat moulding at the upper rim, a row of ball-motif (?) below it, and a pattern of poorly executed ribs on the sides and underbowl; the pedestal base is slender, with a roll moulding at the top and torsade pattern on the stem. The inner basin has a drilled hole below the rim, likely and anchoring spot for a now lost cover. The font is now located in the Mudéjar cloister of the active monastery. Upon a request for information from BSI the monastery informed [e-mail of 4 October 2018]: "La pila no, no es originaria del monasterio. To this information was attached the photograph of a document with the heading and stamp of the Iglesia Parroquial de Campo, signed by the parish priest Angel Castillo Murillo; the letter certiifies that, with the agreement of the Bishop of Barbastro, Ambrosio Echebarria Arroita and of the Prioress of the Monasterio de la Resurreccion -Orden del Santo Sepulcro- Zaragoza, the baptismal font of Terraza is moved to the said monastery. The letter is dated 5 October 1976 and bears the additional signature of the Prioress. With the help of the blog Despoblados en Huesca [www.despobladosenhuesca.com/search/label/TERRAZA], we have been able to locate 'Terraza' as an abandoned hamlet in El Solano de Bacamorta, in the Ribagorza, and its abandoned church, formerly the Iglesia Parroquial de San Saturnino, a building dated in this source as mid-12th century in the Lombardic style; the church was modified in the 16th century 'Morillo de Liena' and a 'Bacamorta' in a valley knows as 'Valle de Terraza'. The letter quoted above states that the priest authorising the donation of the font is the priest in charge ["encargado"]of Morillo de Liena and its region ["comarca"]. Morillo de Liena and Campo are both located off the A139, NNE of Barbastro, in the province of Huesca, region known as La Ribagorza.
