Font Notes:
There is an entry for this Uffington [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [http://opendomesday.org/place/SU3089/uffington/] [accessed 9 June 2015], but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. 'Church notes...' (1887) in the context of some "notes [that] were taken between 1835 and 1840": "The font is not remarkable." The Victoria County History (Berkshire, vol. 4, 1924) notes: "The church of Uffington belonged in the 12th century to the abbey of Abingdon [...] With the exception of one window, the upper part of the tower, and some 17th-century restoration, it belongs entirely to the first half of the 13th century, though a small round-headed recess on the south side of the chancel may be a fragment of an earlier building. No other traces of 12th-century work, however, remain, the church having been rebuilt anew from the foundation. [...] The font, pulpit and seating are all modern". This modern font is of the basic Perpendicular design, octagonal all over, and with cusped panels on the basin sides; one peculiarity of it is that the inner well of the basin is also octagonal, not a common occurrence either in the Perpendicular or in the Victorian period [NB: we have no information on the medieval font].
