Anderson (1864) suggests the collegiate church granted to Shrewsbury Abbey in the late 11th century had a Saxon origin. The 'Salopian shreds and patches (issue of 14 May 1879: 172) reports on the renovation of this church: "The present church is full of interest combining the architecture of a succession of periods from the Norman down to the latest Perpendicular [...] A structure of Saxon origin once stood here, which was followed by a Norman one, which is attributed to the latter part of the 12th century. In 1876 the north aisle was rebuilt under the direction of Sir G Scott [...] During 1878 a handsome and massive stone font octagon in shape designed by he late Sir G Scott was placed in the church." A few months later, the 3 December 1879 issue of the 'Salopian shreds and patches' reports the re-opening of the renovated church and remarks on its font: "A new font, with black marble columns and eight symbolical panels, has taken the place of the old font ". The Parish website [http://www.standrewsshifnal.org.uk/pg12%20tour.htm] [accessed 23 April 2010] illustrates a Victorian font, a polygonal basin on multiple column support. [NB: we have no information on the medieval font(s) of this church]
