No individual entry found for Llanfair Waterdine in the Domesday survey. The entry for this church in British Listed Buildings [https://britishlistedbuildings.co.uk/101176366-church-of-st-mary-llanfair-waterdine] [accessed 22 January 2020] notes: "Parish church. 1854 on earlier site [...] C19 octagonal stone font with wooden cover". The Parish website [www.llink.org.uk/stmary.html] [accessed 13 April 2010] notes: "1852-54 The old church was demolished and the present one built at a cost of £1000. Only parts of the old church remaining are carved altar rail which was part of the old rood screen and, possibly, the old font placed beneath the pulpit." Newman & Pevsner (2006), however, report only a font by Thomas Nicholson, the architect responsible for the 1853-1854 church that replaced the earlier one; the Victorian font is described as octagonal with concave sides. The old font identified in the Parish website is a plain tub-shaped basin with considerable damage to its upper rim; it rests directly on the ground. A history of St. Mary's, written by a local amateur historian in 1991, states: "A stone font, thought to be of Saxon origin, stands between the pulpit and the front pew" [source: e-mail to BSI (26 April 2010)
