Garbet (1818) writes: "The church is dedicated to the Apostles Petef and Paul as Mr. William Mytton found in an ancient deed; but no wakes is kept in memory thereof […] The north porch, and the lower part of the walls [...] being perhaps the remains of the first church erected here in the Saxon's time [...] The cavity of the font is so shallow that it is not practicable to dip infants in it" [NB: which means the font seen by Garbet was a late replacement, probably of the 17th or 18th century]. Anderson (1864) suggests the "manorial lords were probably the founders, as they continued the patrons, of Wem church". Anderson (ibid.) further notes: "Ivo Pantulf was rector of Wem very early in the 13th century", and adds that this church was valued £13 6s. 8d. per year in 1291 [NB: the Norman Pantulfs or Pantouls were lords of the manor at the time of the Domesday survey, 1086]. [NB: we have no information on the medieval font of this church]. No font mentioned in Newman & Pevsner (2006).
