Noted in 'Gotische Bronzefünten in Nordostdeutschland' [http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotische_Bronzef%C3%BCnten_in_Nordostdeutschland] [accessed 3 April 2010] as a bronze baptismal font made in 1497 by Peter Hansen. The name of the maker and the date are part of the set of inscriptions found on different areas of the font: the date appears on the upper band; 'Peter Hanssen' appears next to the name of the Evangelist St. Luke; each of the four standing figures supporting the basin has a scroll with its own inscription. The sides of the basin are decorated with an arcade of twelve Gothic arches with foliated crockets, five of the arches are triple arches; the order of the scenes and figures is [L->R]: 1)Crucifixion of Christ with the Virgin Mary and St. John in attendance in a triple arch; 2)a bishop, probably St. Nicholas, patron saint of this church; 3)an unidentified Apostle, who has lost its symbol; 4)triple arch containing the Coronation of the Virgin Mary in Heaven; 5)St. Peter holding the keys; 6)triple arch with Majestas Domini with lily and double-edged sword; 7)Apostle with knife or sword, St. Paul?; 8)Apostle with flaying knife? St. Bartholomew?; 9)triple arch containing the Trinity: God the Father holds the Son on a Tau cross on which perches the Holy Ghost as a dove; on the right is a kneeling figure in an offering stance; perhaps a donor?; 10)triple arch with the Baptism of Christ; 11)St. James in his pilgrim garb; 12)a second St. Peter? On the upper rim protrude two human heads at opposite ends, in the manner of handles, but probably as securing anchors for the font cover; the basin stands on four human figures dressed in elegant robes; clerics? [cf. supra] [NB: the inscriptions on the scrolls of these figures are partial texts of the full Biblical phrase on the font at Minden [i.e., Mark 16:16: "He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned."] [cf. ImagesArea nd FiledNotes for a full description of the programme on this font].
