Bronze baptismal font made by Hinrich Gerwiges in 1453. Noted and illustrated in 'Gotische Bronzefünten in Nordostdeutschland' [http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gotische_Bronzef%C3%BCnten_in_Nordostdeutschland] [accessed 2 April 2010] as a bronze font raised on three figures; the only present decoration on it being a Latin inscription, but the source refers to Beseler (?) as stating that the now plain sides were once decorared with figures welded to the them. but must have been removed at some point ["Die schlichte gotische Bronzefünte in Aegidien fällt hinter dem prunkvollen Umbau des Barock aus dem Jahr 1710 zunächst nicht ins Auge. Das Tauffass wird von drei Klerikern auf den linken Schultern getragen. Die weitere Verzierung besteht nur in der lateinischen Majuskelumschrift. Beseler weist daraufhin, das ursprünglich das nunmehr glatte Mittelfeld mit Figurennischen versehen war, die auf den Kessel aufgelötet waren."] On site notes: faint shades/traces of the removed decoration -standing figures?- can be discerned on the basin sides; asked the warden if there was any informaion available on the removed decoration but none is available. A second inscription, this one in German and modern lettering, runs around the modern metal insert inside the basin, also below the upper rim [cf.InscriptionNotes]
