Anderson (1864) notes a chapel in existence in 1291 and 1341 tax assessments, and an incumbent as early as 1276. Newman & Pevsner (2006) note the 1749 church was built "reusing some masonry of a late C12 church", but do not mention a font in this church. The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SJ3957512307] note: "Parish church. Dated 1749, incorporating probably C12 fragments [...] possibly C17 stone font in vestibule with octagonal base and bowl, and cover dated 1926".
