There are two entries for this Broughton [variant spellings] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SJ4924/broughton/] [accessed 1 September 2019], one of which mentions a priest, but not a church in it, though there must have been one there. A pamphlet on the two churches in Broughton -the old and the new- issued in 2008 by Canon William Price [www.myddle.net/muratest/assets/File/A_tale_of_two_churches.pdf] [accessed 1 September 2019] shows a partial view of the interior which includes the chancel and, semi-hiden behind one of the pillars, a tub-shaped font, a large basin of roughly hemispherical shape resting on a squat base; the position of this font within the chancel was probably not the original one in the medieval church; this location is confirmed in the text of the guide: "According to a plan made at the time of its being abandoned, the font was in the chancel"; this same guide adds: " The font, altar, communion rails, bells, and ‘indeed everything which was in a perfect state’ were moved from the old Church to the new." In its description of the new St Mary's the same source notes: "On entering the Church through the south doorway the visitor sees the circular Norman font, brought here from the old Church, and possibly 800 years old." Newman & Pevsner (2006) note: "Font. C12. Plain bowl on a roll moulding." The entry for the old church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SJ5011623959] notes: "Parish church, remains of. Late C12, partly demolished and ruined after 1858. [...] Remains of chancel, approximately 10 x 7 metres and standing up to approximately one metre high." The entry for the new church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SJ5045023444] mentions a "stone tub font" from the old church in it.
