There is an entry for this Astley [variant spelling] in Folio: 252v Great Domesday Book [http://domesdaymap.co.uk/place/SJ5218/astley/] [accessed 17 July 2014], but it mentions neither church nor priest in it, although the holdings of Shrewsbury St. Mary's may include a cleric here. The present font in this church consists of an octagonal basin, the sides decorated with floral motifs inscribed in the quatrefoil-in-a-circle-in-a-square arrangement of fonts of the Perpendicular period; on a moulded pedestal base, also octagonal; the design is Perpendicular but the font is probably Victorian. [NB: we have no information on the original font of the Norman church here]
