Scene Description: the west side is very rough indeed and may have been meant to go against a wall or be partly immured in one -- notice the metal staple partly visible on the narrow north side of the upper rim

There is an entry for Smethcott [variant spelling] in the Domesday survey [https://opendomesday.org/place/SO4499/smethcott/] [accessed 7 August 2019] but it mentions neither cleric nor church in it. Anderson (1864) notes: "A rude font within this church and two circular-headed windows indicate the Norman character of the building". The entry for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: SO4494199379] notes: "Parish church. 1849-50, by J. P. Harrison, incorporating material from former C12 church [...] possibly C12 oval stone font with plain wooden top". The entry for this church in the CRSBI (2019) notes: "The medieval church belonged to a castle [...] 12thc font at the W end of the nave [...] The font resembles an oblong cushion capital. With the exception of chisel marks, it is plain. Made of white sandstone. The square bowl is lined with lead."
