Hasted (1799) notes that the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem had a preceptory in Swingfield and that the "The rectory of this church was early appropriated to the hospital of St. John, which continued in the possessions of all the profits of it, till the dissolution of the hospital in the 32d year of king Henry VIII." Hasted does not mention a font. In his 1866 visit to this church, Glynne (1877) noted: "The font is new one, with an octagonal bowl" [NB: the church goes back to Norman times, but we have no information on its earlier font(s)]
