No individual entry found for Boughton Monchelsea in the Domesday survey. Glynne (1877), who visited this church in 1863, noted a modern font in it. The entry for this church in English Heritage [Listing NGR: TQ7692749528] notes: "Parish church. Possibly with late C11 or C12 core, C13, C14, C15. Repaired 1832 after fire. Nave, aisles, porches and south transept rebuilt 1874-5 by Habershon. [...] Tower: probably late C11 or C12, altered and partly rebuilt in C14 and C15"; no font mentioned. The Parish website [http://www.boughton-monchelsea-pc.org.uk/pages/village-history.shtml] [accessed 16 February 2010] informs: "The church was built around 1100 […] In the late 14th century substantial rebuilding took place […] The tower and north isle were partially rebuilt in 1530-40. There was a disastrous fire in 1832 when the nave was destroyed. The church was rebuilt in 1834 with further extensive rebuilding and enlargement in 1874 […] at the far west end of the south wall" of the nave, is the font. [NB: the font in use in this church is modern; it consists of an octagonal basin with pseudo-crenellation around the upper rim, with the symbols of the Evangelists alternating with decorative panels, cherubs on the underbowl chamfer, a short base qirth squat columns and miniscule couchant lions; on an octagonal plinth; a totally disproportionate design. Wooden cover with metal decoration and ring handle, also modern. We have no information on the medieval font]
