The Parish website [http://www.delavalparish.org.uk/ourlady.html] [accessed 4 February 2010] notes that "A blocked up window and stonework in the north wall of the nave and the top section of the font suggest pre-Norman origins". The illustration in this source shows a round basin with tapering sides raised on a narrow cylindrical pedestal base; the only decorative motif is the torus-scotia combination on the upper basin side. If the basis is as old as this source suggests, it must have been re-cut or re-tooled.
