view of church exterior - tower

Scene Description: Source caption: "St Oswald's bell tower. How unusual to discover that the bell tower for St Oswald's church is sat on top of a hill well above the church. The tower dates from 1897, replacing a wooden structure of 1747."

Font Notes:
No entry found for Kirkoswald in the Domesday survey. Noted in Cox (1913): "The circular font on a similar base is [...] Norm[an]." Cox (ibid.) adds: "On the occasion of our visit (9 August, 1912) the effigy was much disfigured by a vigorous treatment with some ruddy coloured mixture; the like "embellishment" had also been liberally applied to the font." The listing for this church in Historic England [Listing NGR: NY5551440902] notes: "Church. Early C12 with late C12 additions, mid C13 and early C16 additions; renovations of 1847 and 1878 [...] Medieval bowl font". The font shows a very reddish hue; the round pedestal base and square lower base appear to be a modern replacement. The tall wooden cover of conical shape is modern.
