Described and illustrated in Schulze-Dörrlamm (2009): holy-water stoup, probably of the 9th-10th century, made of marble; a round basin on a cylindrical pedestal base; the basin has a Latin inscription around the upper side [cf. Inscription area]. [NB: the stoup was displayed in the musem without the base on 16 September 2017]. Described and illustrated in Romina Schiavone' Weihwasserbecken mit Inschrift in the Museum Katalog [20240122120650.pdf] p.99: first written about in a scientific publication in 1894, believed to be originally from Mainz, and part of the collection of the Christlichen Kunstvereins im Dom until 1970.1875, where it is thought it stood on a slender pedestal base to match the bottom area of the stoup.
as being; Schiavone's text gives the following references: Arensigs8; Glanz derspäten Karolinger 2013, Nr. 48, S. 17g f. (Mechthild Schulze-Dörrlamm); Kraus 1894, S. 115, Nr. 246; Neeb ig34, S.75; Schulze-Dörrlamm 2009, S.2öf. BSI received confirmation from the Museum (e-mail of 2 January 2024 from Dr. Birgit Heide, Direktorin, Direktion Landesmuseum Mainz): "The inscription of the holy-water font is somewhat damaged and dates from the 9./10.th century. It is to be read: + GERO ET POPVLO XPIANO [AQU]M BENEDICTAM [FERAM or OFFERAM] (from Prof. Dr. Tino Licht). You will find further information in the catalogue: „Die Kaiser und die Säulen ihrer Macht.
