The entry for this Premonstratensian abbey in the Victoria County History (Lincoln, vol. 2, 1906) notes: "The abbey of Newhouse was the first of this order established in England, the founder being Peter of Gousla [...] The dedication of the house was to the honour of St. Mary and St. Martial, and the date of foundation 1143. [...] The house was dissolved under the first Act of Suppression". The entry for this abbey in Historic England PastScape [www.pastscape.org.uk/hob.aspx?hob_id=80495] [accessed 8 May 2019] notes: "The site was in use as a private residence after the dissolution and incorporated into a landscape park during the 18th century. Parts of the abbey including the precinct boundary are visible as earthworks. practically the whole precinct of Newsham Abbey appears to be definable and to survive in a relatively undisturbed state, with the principal exception of the southern fringe."
