Scene Description: Source caption: "12th- or early 13th-century parish church, which probably replaced an earlier building. The very distinctive stone barrel-vaulted roof dates from the 17th century; during restoration work in 1843 three cannonballs were found lodged in the roof-space."

There is not entry for Bellingham in the Domesday Survey. The National Gazetteer of 1868 notes: "The church, a small ancient edifice of the middle of the 13th century, is dedicated to St. Cuthbert. It stands on high ground by the river, and was twice destroyed by fire during the border wars. When rebuilt the third time, the nave was formed entirely of stone, without any woodwork; and the roof, which is finely groined, is an object of great interest, being the only one of the kind in the United Kingdom. On the north side is a Saxon doorway", but does not mention a font. The present font is noted in Pevsner (1957): "Bowl on octagonal shaft with simple geometrical C17 decoration". The present font is described in the web page of the North Tyne and Redesdale Team [https://sites.google.com/site/ntyneredesdalechurches/home/team-churches/bellingham-st-cuthbert] [accessed 18 May 2017]: "The post-Reformation font, an octagonal stone pillar, has a wooden carved cover with metal circlet inscribed in memory of those from the parish who died in the 1939 to 1945 World War. The cover was completed in 1952, under the supervision of the Newcastle firm of architects, Edwards and Manby. The base was made by Mr Hedworth, deservedly described by the architect as “a very good craftsman” and the carving of Mary and the infant Jesus was by Mr G.M. Dudley, Department of Fine Art, King’s College, Newcastle. The total cost, including the architects’ fee, was £28.13.0d – evidently this fine piece of work was a labour of love! "
