The National Gazetteer of 1868 notes: "The church, dedicated to the Holy Cross, is a stone edifice in the Gothic style, and contains several beautiful stained-glass memorial windows. The register commences 1713", but does not mention a font. Wilson (1870) states that the church "is a modern edifice, built, originally, in the likeness of a substantial shed or barn […] The font is modern; and stands in the south-east angle of the nave."
